Law enforcement agencies offer databases that can be checked mostly for free or at a minimum cost, such as for physical copies.

This article provides step-by-step instructions and lists the available resources for searching mugshots in Macomb County, Michigan.

Where To Look Up Free Mugshots

Mugshots are captured police photographs of individuals arrested, including information such as their full name, date arrested and charge. This record is usually kept and maintained by the arresting agency.

In Macomb County, records of arrest fall under the jurisdiction of the sheriff’s office. Searchers may access offenders’ mugshots by conducting a county-level search. Such information and photos may also be available from the local correctional facility.

However, if it happens that a record cannot be found through a county-level search, it is advisable to consider checking the city law enforcement agencies, particularly the police departments. City police departments maintain records of recent arrests that occurred within their jurisdictions.

Moreover, when the offender is already confined in a state prison, their mugshot can be viewed via the Michigan Department of Correction jail roster.

How To Access Free Mugshots in Macomb County Michigan: Official Resources

Staying informed of the recent arrests and people who committed a crime is beneficial for public safety. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) allows citizens to view offenders’ mugshots; searchers can find these records online or directly from the MCSO Records Office.1

To search for offender records online, you can utilize the JailTracker Tool.2 This online tool requires the offender’s name to initiate a search. If you have limited information about the offender, you can also search using only the offender’s last name.

Results will display a list of offenders that match your search criteria with the person’s full name, booking date and jacket number. Offender’s mugshot can be viewed by clicking the “View More” button, along with additional information such as the inmate’s physical description, charges, court details and facility where the inmate is held.

Search “[City Name] Police Department” on Google or any search engine, then look for their records request page or contact page to request mugshots and other offender details.

Viewing Prison Mugshots Online (State & Federal Resources)

To view prisoners’ information, searchers may need to perform a statewide search.

Offender records, such as mugshots — whether they are currently confined in jail, discharged, absconded or under supervision (paroled or on probation) — are made available to the general public through the Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) hosted by the Michigan Department of Corrections (DOC).6

Note: Offenders’ information will be removed from the system after 3 years from the discharged date.

To search for offender information, the system requires the person’s name or DOC number. However, providing additional information such as sex, race, age, scars or tattoos and specifying the offender status will filter for more accurate results. Once the search criteria are filled out, click the “Search” button.

Search results show a list of offenders that match your search criteria. Mugshots of the offender of interest can be viewed by clicking the offender number, which will display the details page.

However, if you think that the offender you are searching for has been transferred to a federal prison, their records are accessible through the Find an Inmate Tool hosted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), but note that online results don’t show mugshots.10

According to the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, mugshots are public records.11 However, using them for unlawful purposes, such as fraud, intimidation, stalking, or discrimination in employment, or other professional activities, is prohibited. Victims of such misuse can take legal action against the offender.

Furthermore, when curious about searching local public information other than mugshots, refer to the instructions for obtaining Macomb County public records, which provides detailed guidance on accessing information on warrants, arrest and criminal records, property ownership, vital records (birth, death, marriage and divorce records) and more.
